Kinja'd!!!

...this arrived the other day. Needless to say, I’m in love!

Kinja'd!!!

I paid way more than I should have (read: significantly more than $0), but I couldn’t help myself. These don’t come around too often, and it’s in really nice shape. You may consider me a Gateway2000 Fanboy (if there is such a thing).

Kinja'd!!!

The specs: 90mhz Pentium 1, 16mb RAM, 1GB Connor HDD, ATI Mach64 4mb graphics card, Creative SoundBlaster CT2230, 3Com Etherlink III, and a Gateway2000 branded US Robotics Modem. It’s currently running DOS 6.22.

Kinja'd!!!

(The “new” desktop makes it quite obvious how yellowed the tower is)

This is now my second Gateway2000 PC (the first being the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! ). Both are running great. I’m thinking of moving some RAM over from the tower, and installing Windows 95 on the desktop. I’m already running DOS 5.0 and Windows 3.1 on the tower, and I don’t need two computers running the same setup.

Man, I grew up on those machines. Enjoy that SB16!

Is this keyboard mechanical?

(I guess not)

It’s a rubber dome, and a soft one at that. It still types pretty well, but it isn’t my favorite.

I’m still pissed so many years later that our old IBM workstation with windows 3.1 on it was sold at a yardsale. If nothing else, it was neat, and had the best keyboard ever.

I do still have its replacement though, which is also a Gateway2000 tower, but with a P2 and something like 8gb of HDD (it was maxed out when new, I seem to recall a receipt for almost $1300!)

I thought you would like it! I haven’t tried out the SB16 yet, but I look forward to it.

Those old IBM workstations are neat! I understand the feeling. We had an old Leading Edge Model D that we got rid of the monitor and keyboard.

I’m always impressed with the amount of improvement computers made in the ‘90s. Those specs are leaps and bounds better than my Gateway2000s, and I bet yours is only 3 or 4 years newer.

All this reminds me of the Commodore 64 my room mate and I shared our freshman year. We wrote our papers on a word processor that lived on a 5 1/4 “ floppy with a notch cut in it to make it double sided. It didn’t save reliably; so, when a paper was in progress, we had a sign to put on it reminding the other to not turn it off until we could print the final version. Then we would shut off the monitor to prevent burn in.

He also had a bunch of games we used to play on it instead of doing work, like Ultima 4.

TURBO! I don’t know if it did anything, but I loved pressing that button.

I don’t remember the exact year of it but it did come with Windows 95! So fancy

Neither of these actually have the turbo button. The older models did, but they replaced it with a combination of keys on the keyboard.

The turbo button actually works opposite of what most people think. When pressed, it would actually slow down the processor to allow older programs to run correctly. This video explains it pretty well:
